Network Performance Engineer Job Description

Responsibilities

This Senior Network Performance Engineer position is a full time salaried position focused on performing the following duties:

- Perform and analyze: packet captures, flow data and device data to identify opportunities that improve end user and system network performance
- Propose and develop tools to identify network performance opportunities
- Analyze data from network performance management tools
- Lead, negotiate, assign, track and report on infrastructure performance improvement opportunities to be completed by both yourself and other IT groups.
- Identify services that are using resources from suboptimal locations on the network.
- Develop detailed network designs and tuning recommendations for the network.
- Implement network improvements using ITIL processes.
- Periodically report on progress through project management methods
- Periodically report the data that shows how these changes have improved network performance.
- Periodically report the data that shows network capacitates that are growing rapidly, approaching or needing to be upgraded.
- Keep abreast of national trends and practices at peer groups around the country.
- Collaborate with other non Health Sciences groups on campus

Performs tasks associated with the engineering of network systems used in data communications services, including fiber optic, twisted pair, switches, routers, wireless infrastructure, firewalls, load balancers, IP management, NMS and LAN/WAN systems.

Performs network assessments, engineering designs and assists in short term and long range network planning. This position is focused on the Health Sciences network environment which supports approximately 50,000 network ports.

Prepare various documents such as engineering design documents, standards, architectures, proposals and implementation plans.

Coordinates joint activities and projects with other departments and team members

Caries out responsibilities with minimal supervision

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalency. Experience in IT service with emphasis on network engineering and performance management.

Knowledge of industry standards for data systems engineering and network communications. Including the following technologies:

Cisco, Juniper firewall, OSPF, EIGRP, Switching, 802.1D, Load Balancers, HSRP and MPLS Project Management and Network performance tuning, netflow, SNMP, Orion.

Advanced network certification preferred.


Work Schedule:

Full-time 40 hours/week

Responsibilities:

- Designs and plans network communications systems.
- Provides specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture.
- Provides specific detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements.
- Conducts testing of network design.
- Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc.
- Evaluates and reports on new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network.
- Performs a full range of complex network designs encompassing multiple technologies within a single network.
- Evaluates new network technologies and makes recommendations to project managers regarding the integration of these technologies into the existing network.
- Plans new configuration for integration into the network, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being added to the network and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance.
- Prepares technical proposals for presentation to the Sponsor’s engineering review boards for adding new technologies to the network.
- Performs a full range of upgrades to the existing network architecture.
- Reviews user requests for upgrades or additions to the network to assess impact on network performance and provides advice and guidance on the most practical technical approach to meeting user requirements.
- Proposes upgrades to existing network configurations, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being upgraded and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance.
- Utilizes complex network analysis tools to identify and correct problems in the network.
- Prepares troubleshooting procedures for restoring the network to optimal performance levels.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

- Knowledge of theory and practice underlying satellite and LAN/WAN network operations.
- Knowledge of the CIO’s policies and procedures relating to the design, upgrading, and operating and maintaining networks.
- Ability to assess the technical characteristics of new operating capabilities proposed for inclusion in the network to determine potential impact on network performance.
- Ability to utilize complex network analysis tools to resolve complex network performance problems. Ability to provide explanations of complex technical procedures and processes clearly and accurately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols.
- In-depth knowledge of and experience with major internet routing protocols; specifically BGP and OSPF
- In-depth knowledge of and experience with major router platforms; specifically with Cisco 37xx, 49xx, 65xx, 73xx, 76xx platforms including all compatible supervisory and line cards for these platforms.
- Excellent network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
- Configuring load balancers, troubleshooting traffic engineering using BGP and large scale network design and maintenance is critical.
- Candidates should also have had significant past experience with, and expertise in many of the following protocols & technologies: DWDM, T1/DS1, DS3, SONET (OC3, OC48), 802.2/3, 802.1d VLANs/STP, IPv4 & IPv6, TCP (internals & flow control), BGP, OSPF, HSRP/GLBP, PIMv2, IGMP, LDP, TACACS, IPSEC & VPNs, netflow, DNS, HTTP.
- Experience with mission critical multicast systems is highly desired.
- Experience designing network and datacenter installations utilizing L2 and L3 protocols is highly desired.
- Strong Unix skills and the ability to script in Perl, shell, C or C++ is desirable.
- CCIE Lab and Written a huge plus.

Qualifications:

Required

- Bachelor’s Degree in technical discipline such as Electrical Engineer, Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems or Software Engineering or equivalent.
- Five years industry experience in a similar environment
